Looking for a speaker who can engage, motivate and inspire students to become better readers and writers?
Noted historian, novelist and talented storyteller Mike Kearby receives rave reviews from audiences for his colorful presentations of important moments in the history of the old West. Whether sharing the stories of early black cowboys or detailing the life of children captured by the Indians, Mike captures the attention of even the most restless audience with presentations that are both engaging and informative. Each presentation Mike gives is custom-tailored to the audience, directly relating to classroom assignments and projects. He reinforces the instructor’s learning objectives while encouraging students to become better readers and writers. His presentations range from school assemblies to full-day sessions for individual or combined classes and draw from the material in his eleven novels and his ongoing historical research.
Here’s what others say about Mike’s presentations:
Ever tried to keep 350 antsy teenagers interested in reading the day before Spring Break? Well Mike Kearby did just that here at Crockett Middle School. He tailored his presentations on horses and Comanche Indians to keep every ear tuned. What a pleasure to have Mike share his talents, his deep interest in Texas history, and his dynamic presentation style with teens—kids who often are reluctant to read for fun. At 3:15 p.m.,a swarm of students buzzed into the library wanting to check out Mike’s novels! –Cara Kee, Librarian, Crockett Middle School, Amarillo, Texas
My Students Loved Him! One of my students commented, “At first, I thought it was going to be boring because I didn’t like his clothes and then I was thinking, what does a white guy know about black history? But after he spoke, I thought he was so cool. So my mom and I went to Hastings to buy the book.” This was pretty amazing because this kid absolutely does not, and is very frank about his disdain for reading. We have SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) for 10–15 minutes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and he has been reading Kearby’s book in class every time he gets a chance. –Denisha M. Presley, English I, San Marcos High School
I highly recommend Mike Kearby to any school or library. Mike is able to seamlessly blend his experiences as an author, teacher, storyteller, historian, inventor, rancher, and business owner into an informative presentation that both students and teachers will enjoy. The groups I gave him for an audience were very eclectic – grades 9-12, mixed ability groups (Sp. Ed. to AP) and mixed subject areas (English and History.) The fact that he was able to speak to these mixed groups and motivate and encourage our students to be life-long readers and writers was very exciting. If you have the opportunity to invite an author to your school, consider Mike. You will be pleased you did. –Donna Overcash, District Head Librarian, Mineral Wells ISD, Mineral Wells, Texas
